Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck) was an American actor and singer whose career spanned over 40 years. A torch performer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her rendition of "Cry me a river" which she had included on her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her role in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began as an actress while she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 when she was cast in movies. This included roles as the lead female role in several westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This was the beginning of her professional career in music. In 1969, she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be a star in television's Emergency series in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) where she acted with her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
